Announcement
The U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE's) Energy Earthshots Initiative aims to accelerate breakthroughs of more abundant, affordable, and reliable clean energy solutions within the decade.
The first Energy Earthshot, launched June 7, 2021—Hydrogen Shot—seeks to reduce the cost of clean hydrogen by 80% to $1 per 1 kilogram in 1 decade ("1 1 1")
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Hydrogen Shot Summit convened thousands of stakeholders online to introduce the Hydrogen Shot, solicit dialogue, and rally the global community on the urgency of tackling the climate crisis through concrete actions and innovation. The Hydrogen Shot Summit was held virtually August 31 and September 1, 2021.
In commemoration of National Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Day, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) officially launched the Million Mile Fuel Cell Truck (M2FCT) consortium to advance fuel cell truck R&D.
M2FCT will have Los Alamos and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratories as co-leads. It will focus on fuel cell durability, performance, and cost to better position fuel cell trucks as a viable option in the long-haul trucking market.
To realize the fuel-cell durability goals for heavy-duty applications more effectively and to accelerate the research output, M2FCT has formed a working group on the discussion and development of Accelerated Stress Testing (AST) of fuel cells and their components. Please check our ASTWG outreach page for more information on the objectives and our partners.
M2FCT consortium announced a Funding opportunity that seeks to increase academic and national laboratory involvement with M2FCT researchers and bring them into the consortium as PIs.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Hydrogen Program is hosting its first Hydrogen Shot Summit on August 31 and September 1, 2021.
The two-day summit will bring together stakeholders from industry, research, academia, and government to identify pathways to meet DOE’s Hydrogen Shot of $1 per 1 kilogram in 1 decade. The summit will also feature breakout sessions covering multiple hydrogen production pathways and other topics, including:
- Electrolysis
- Thermal conversion with carbon capture and storage
- Advanced pathways
- Deployment and financing.
The Hydrogen Shot Summit will be a virtual event. More information, including an agenda and registration details, will be available soon.
