Bio

Michael Ulsh is group manager for NREL’s Process Science & Engineering group and leads projects in the Chemistry & Nanoscience Center focusing on the development of diagnostic systems for in-line quality control during production of clean energy material active layers, the study of the performance and lifetime effects of manufacturing defects in these materials, and exploration of material-process-performance relationships in membrane-electrode assembly fabrication. Mike is also the NREL lab-lead for a multi-lab consortium on solution processing and roll-to-roll manufacturing and is involved in several fuel cell supply chain development and cost modeling projects. These projects are funded through FCTO, VTO, AMO, and DOE-FE as well as private industry. Mike’s previous experience includes 11 years at 3M Company, where he developed processes and products based on multilayer and coated polymer film constructions and transferred these technologies to a roll-to-roll manufacturing environment.  Mike has degrees in aerospace and mechanical engineering. He has fourteen issued US patents and over thirty journal articles.
